I've been out digging in the dirt again, since our heat wave seems to have passed. Round II of planting has begun. So here's some photos of the progress of Round I:Peas n' carrotsSome VERY happy bok choy-yum-I'm sensing an impending stir fry here:Progress in the lettuce patch.

Burgeoning broccoli:

Gorgeous red chilis-I've been too lazy-or busy-to pick these and use them for chili rellenos. Okay, Granny J....what do I do with these???

Round II: This is my theory here, or at least what I've been told. When planting, you don't just do it all at once, or then you'll have a harvest all at once. Three weeks ago (or thereabouts), I planted Round I and so yesterday I started Round II-with a few deviations:

See the bigger plants at the top of the picture? They were planted three weeks ago. The itty bitty ones at the bottom were planted yesterday. Now I will have a staggered broccoli/cauliflower harvest.

This year I'm giving celery a shot. We'll see what happens. The lady said to keep it wet.

Photo Update!

Some friends from our ward were visiting the Provo Temple a week ago last Sunday and guess who they saw????

Ahhhhh! There's nothing that makes a mom happier than seeing a photo of her son. Doesn't he look great?That's his companion just behind him. Cool tie.Nope, he hasn't changed a bit. Still making goofy faces for the camera.

I Thought This Kind of Stuff Ended with High School

Sunday morning we woke up to this:

So either someone has a secret crush, or it is all a joke instigated by his numerous male friends, probably the latter. At any rate, I'm secretly pleased-because of course I think he is cool and cute.

Aww. we love Steve too and he rocks our socks.

Now come back and wash off my driveway.

P.S. You'll note that there are no flowers in the front. I lied on Sat. Flower planting didn't happen. My body told me....no planting happening today. Plus the fact that it was over 100 degrees on Sat. Ug.

Gettin' Crafty Wit it

So...inbetween life and other stuff, I've still managed to squeeze in a bit of creativity. Of course Santa's Workshop has officially opened here and I have banned my children from popping in on me without prior notice, just in case I'm in the middle of some creation intended for Christmas. But here's the latest I can share:

Here's a skirt that only took me about two months to finish. Actually, it really didn't take that long to make, only a couple of hours, but it was too short for my too-long body and I had to figure out how to make it longer. Adding 4 inches of a contrast fabric seemed to do the trick. And didja' notice my best impression of a "Legally Blonde" pose?

And my grandkids think I'm the best when I produce a special themed pillow case for them. I did these last year but one of the littles missed out since she was still in a crib. So here's how I did it. Easy peasy. Even if you don't sew a lick, you CAN do this:

Lay out your specialty theme fabric, wrong sides together, matching the selvage edge on one side and the fold on the other. This happens to be Halloween theme fabric....Then I take a pillow case and lay it over the top and cut around the Halloween fabric. Don't cut the fold, then you'll have one less seam to sew. Add about five inches on one edge to fold over for the hem.

Next, and I apologize for the lack of photos, but I did it so quick and my son came over to pick up the pillow case and took it home. I chased him down the road to try to get another photo but he was gone.....(see how much I exert myself for the sake of my blog)

Now, just take the fabric and fold, RIGHT sides together. Stitch along one short edge, then along the long edge. You'll have a pillowcase! Except wait-you have an opening that is not finished. Fold a small edge over and then fold it over AGAIN about four inches to make a finished edge. Hint- if you press it-it will be SO much easier. (If this is confusing-look at a finished pillowcase-they have hems exactly like this) Then stitch about 4 inches from the edge to make a finished hem. If you have a fancy-schmansy sewing machine, you can use a fancy-schmansy stitch to finish it off, like I did:

Well, you'll have to imagine it, but trust me, it's easy and cute and the kids will love you forever.

Off to Alaska

Well, he's off. And we got to talk to Elder Dan for about 10.35 minutes. He first called @ 6:40 am and then his calling card stopped working. We got to say, Hello, how are you.........

He called back about a half hour later. He said his card didn't work and some really nice lady in the airport took pity on him and let him use her cell phone to call home. So he didn't want to talk long. He sounds good. He says the MTC food did bad things to his stomach.......He's excited to go. His plane was delayed so he will be running from one plane to the next in Seattle to be on time to catch his flight to Anchorage. He says he is very tired and he said he was very hungry. (I think he was anxious to go get some "real food.") He sounds more grown up and confident. He's going with a group of 10 missionaries. We told him everyone said "hello."

And that's about it. Until Christmas.
