Yep, It's all out war these days. I mean, it's between me and the birds! The sweetness of the juicy, ripe, red strawberries attracts those pesky birds so it's a battle every day to get to the berries before they do! I'm not sure if I'm winning the war though...
More than 50% of these babies have a few peck marks in them.....
I recently bought a food scale to keep track of my harvest. These folks have completely inspired me. Although I don't garden on the scale that they do-they manage to harvest between 6000-8000 POUNDS of food each year off their ordinary city lot. That's alottafood folks!
My harvest total Tues: 4 pounds!!!!
Nearly 4 oz of berries
7 oz of carrots
3 lbs of lettuce!
Woo-haa....only 5996 pounds to go.....
If the birds don't get it first!

So how are you keeping those birds away? My friend is having trouble w/ birds and cats getting into her garden...any suggestions?
No advice, just empathy. "Don't shoot the little birds" always plays through my mind!
Ga...those dang birds! We had an awesome grapevine when we bought this house but it got to be so much work trying to keep the birds out that we finally gave up. I heard getting some sort of mesh over it would help but anything on the outer edges would still get pecked to death. We lost vs the birds. I hope you are victorious!
Hi: I suggest something like chicken wire above your fruit. It will keep the birds out. There may be something more like plastic that will work. But the wire is more rigid and will stay in place better. Good Luck! Love, Mom (Mom-I'm cutting and pasting your comments until I can get up there and show you how to comment for real!!)
Good for you! I am so impressed with all your gardening. Someday I am going to give it a try.
I will take all 6000 pounds of food in strawberries please..pecked at or not.
OH WOW, those berries look devine! YUMMY! My favorite fruit. Good luck as when I put the food out for the game animals, I get birds o of many flocks coming down also for feed. I get some just beautiful red birds and some doves also.
Ok, well how is the spinach smoothie coming along? I haven't made it in a while.
