Gardening Updates-The Last and The First

Time is marching on in the garden these days. It's a time of beginnings and endings....

The last of the carrots. {sigh} Carrots take a loooong time to grow but I needed the space for the melons to stretch out. Time to rinse off the sign and put it away....Bye carrots, I'll see you next fall! These are going to be sacrified this week to my Alabama Soup recipe and chicken pot pie.

The first of the potatoes! One of the plants had shriveled up and died, so being the impatient sort, I dug around and fished these guys out. They are a tad small. {dontcha think?} I think I'm going to try a different method of growing potatoes next year......I'm thinkin'. I'll let you know when I decide.....

The first ripe grape cluster!!! I just polished it off and it was mighty good! The grapes are very small but they taste nice and fresh and sweet.

Some things are good in the garden, some not so good. I have seen a few green critters munching away on my plants so every morning it's search and destroy time.....

My cucumbers STILL aren't producing the right flowers.......i.e. we need male and female flowers to make baby cucumbers.....So I have been meddling about, mixing the male armenian cucumber pollen with the sweet burpless variety....it may be interesting to see what we come up with! Burpless armenian sweets?????

The strawberries really haven't taken off like I had hoped. I have a few berries here and there, but not the basketfulls I want.

Many of you asked in the earlier corn post if I had grown the corn I froze. No. I'm going to be mighty lucky to get a half dozen ears from my little patch.

So there you have it....the realities of my garden life, the successes and the failures. Thank heavens there's always a new season coming up to try again!

Gardening is tricksy! It teaches us sooo much like...sprouting isn't enough, you've got to have roots! I'm just glad we live in a time with modern production techniques and grocery stores! ;)

Hi Marilyn, thanks for the comment! I have had a ball with the websites that I was sent and learning a lot. I could grow like crazy in N AZ but now . . . YIKES! I just stole my daughter's zucchini in a pot to plant next to the one I have to see if it will make ore male flowers for me. I only get an occasional on the one already in the ground.

Love the blog and will take it all in this afternoon after all the babysitting is done for the day . . .aka, it's your quiet time, you're going home . . . aka . . . I need a break!!!

Wow sounds like you truly are becoming a fantastic gardener. I admire your willingness to try and fail and try again. When the time comes....you are going to have the knowledge and ablilty to grow food....the rest of us will be starving to death...but you, but you will have happy tummys at your house.

Haven't had time to check in lately. But holy cow, thats alot of lint. HOLY FIRE HAZARD. Glad you cleaned it out. And poor Uncle T--those shoes--I think he needs to take a little rest!

Marilyn, I really admire you for your gardening efforts and your blogging efforts. It seems I am too tired to do either. Love ya.

All moms need to be more honest....it makes the rest of us feel better about our gardening shortcomings...or other more serious ones :)

And guess what...that corn will probably taste almost JUST AS good as if you had grown it yourself.

I am the same and never know what to expect from my garden!

I would LOVE to try potatoes but don't have enough space yet. I also pulled the last of my carrots this week and was sad to see them go after all the time they took to grow!

I thought you grew the corn and was very envious because I have never had much luck with corn either. :)
