Frugal Friday-A Miserable Failure

Remember This??

Homemade Laundry Soap = Not a success. (no-I didn't use pinto beans in the mixture)
I loved the smell.
It did clean my clothes.
But I got a very nasty looking film coating the stainless steel tub of my washing machine. Not a good thing. (yes, I used a few vinegar washes to see if that would help)
So reluctantly I returned back to the mega-size Gain box purchased from Costco.
{sigh}
Oh well, I tried.

P.S. If anyone out there has any suggestions, I'm still open to try again.
(Now I can delete these photos from my hard drive)

Hey the Duggers (you know the family with 18 kids) did this on one of their recent shows. It seemed very similar to what you did.....you should go to their website and see if they have the episode or info on how to make it!

This is Brets Sister, I have to admit that I am kind of dissapointed, I love using this soap and really don't want to go back, I tried using a magic eraser to get the film off, it seems to work, but my washer tub is also white, just a little harder to see the film. But I couldn't feel it any more. But I don't know how it would work on stainless steel.

Oh and I love your garden, Mine did not turn out nearly that nice, but this is only my second year. Hopefully spring will be alittle better.

I can honestly say I have never aspired to make my own soap! You are so awesome. Please post if you find a good alternative.

First, I love that you even tried!
I have heard of homemade detergent before, but I've never had the guts to try it out...so you're definitely cooler than I am!
I'm new to your blog and will poke back to see what else your misadventures brings!

A low cost, green eco friendly, healthy natural way to do laundry is to put 3 or 4 soapberries in the wash. They grow on the Chinaberry tree and have been used for thousands of years. They work very effectively.

I allowed the previous commented to be posted because I checked out the web site and it is very interesting-soapberries. I may get some and try them out. I still need to research the cost-effectiveness--

marilyn,

My all time most favorite laundry soap is.... Mountain Breeze, Classic Purex Powder with
renuzit super odor Neutralizer (whitens Whites and Brightens colors) at Walmart $2.97 for a 4lb box.

Trust me, I like many others have used just about everything out there. the only thing that I can't use is SUN. Yikes, it makes me itch.

It works great everytime and I also add Downy or any other kind of fabric softner and any kind of dryer sheets.

I keep trying to find something else and then go back to this each and everytime. I put old towels out for the baby chicks at times adn then have to wash them. You know that chickens have a smelly smell. Well, it cleans oh so nice.

Ok, plus one hint if you don't know, add pinesol to the sheets, or towels, gives it a more antibacterial feeling.

Good Luck!

Also go to the Queen of Clean website, I am sure she has great hints. My mother-in-law used to wash in the pond with a scrub board and soap by hand for 11 children plus two adults. YIKES.

I ues the Duggars soap recipe (it is on their web site.) I have really liked it and for some reason it doesn't leave a film on my washer. (it is stainless steal too)

I think if you will turn your soap into a liquid you would like it better.
